It was Labor Day weekend, 1969, two
weeks after Woodstock,
and thousands of hippies and lovers of peace and
music converged
on the small town of Lewisville, just north of Dallas, at
the
Texas Pop Festival
to
be and to see and to hear the music of
B.B.King,
Canned Heat, Chicago,
Delaney & Bonnie & Friends,
Freddie
King, Grand Funk Railroad, Herbie
Mann,
Incredible String Band, James
Cotton Blues Band, Janis Joplin,
Johnny
Winter, Led Zeppelin, Nazz,
The Quarry, Rotary Connection,
Sam
& Dave, Santana, Shiva's
Headband, Sly
& the Family Stone,
Space Opera, Spirit,
Sweetwater, Ten Years
After and Tony Joe White!
Now,
after all these years, a book is in the making!
Yes, I'm still working on it!
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Texas State Historical Marker!
We've applied for a historical
marker to be placed near the site of the festival. The Denton County
Transportation Authority has graciously given permission for the marker to
be located at Hebron Station, the A-train depot now under construction to
the southeast of where the stage was. We also hope to add our own plaque
with a replica of the poster.
There will, of course, be a ceremony for
the unveiling of the marker, and we will undoubtedly provide live music
for the celebration. I hope that will be on Labor Day weekend of
2010.
As sponsor of the marker, I am
responsible for the cost of the marker and application fee. They total
$1600 ($1500 + $100 app. fee). If we can add our own plaque, that amount will be substantially
more.
Hence, we are having a benefit on
Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the Flying Pig Roadhouse. For $10, you can see
Johnny Nitzinger, Soul Sacrifice (Santana tribute), Swan Song (Led
Zeppelin tribute and a tribute for Janis by Piece of My Heart. We'll also
have some memorabilia and CDs, mostly autographed as door prizes and
raffle items.
We'll also have a contest for the most
authentic hippie chick and hippie dude outfits, so dress accordingly.

Note:
Rotary Connection's Sidney Barnes told me a sad story.
He has absolutely no pictures of the band playing on stage- not just at
the Texas Pop Festival, but anywhere!
If anyone out there has any photos of Rotary Connection, please email
me.
Peace, Richard |
